Review: Weed the People: The Future of Legal Marijuana in America

I am reading this great book entitled Weed the People: The Future of Legal Marijuana in America by Bruce Barcott.  I selected this book to read because I am learning about the history or marijuana in my state and in United States. The author comes at the topic from an anti-marijuana view and learns along the way there is much more to marijuana than stoners eating Cheetos watching TV.  Personally what I find so interesting about this read is history in the making.  He covers Colorado and Washington as both states embark on the new recreational market and all the movers and shakers behind the scenes.

Once you learn more about why we view cannabis history and how we had the wool pulled over our eyes about the pros and cons of cannabis your views may change too.  I highly doubt that most Americans really know the history behind why we have fought the plant for so long. The mere 2013 statement broadcast on written on CNN’s website by their very own chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta stating “I am here to apologize. I mistakenly believed the DEA listed marijuana as a schedule 1 substance because of sound scientific proof.” He goes on to say the DEA had no proof though the government continued to deny the medical benefits of cannabis.  I found the earlier history of how the drug was scheduled in the beginning to be quite a fiasco and politically driven…..but then again isn’t everything?

This book is packed with current information and a good historical base to present the topics in an entertaining way that kept me engaged.  If you want to learn a modern view on where we are headed in this country in regards to medical cannabis and recreational cannabis check it out.  It is definitely a read worth your time.
